Abbreviation of "Fax over Internet Protocol". Classic fax terminals were designed for data transmission using a modem over analogue telephone connections. In principle, error-free transmission over packet-switched networks such as the Internet poses a greater challenge than voice transmission. Special protocols have therefore been developed for fax transmission, which do not rely on transmission of the modem signals via RTP based, but to digitize the data to be transmitted at the network transitions. This is the most common of these T.38 Protocol.
